Ziphocoena 0002m

This is a 3D model in dorsal view of a 'synthetic' adult Cuvier's Beaked Whale (Ziphius cavirostris). Beaked whales of this size are typically too large for conventional CT scanners. The model shown here represents a preliminary 3D rendering technique termed 'stitching'. It was created by stitching CT scans of the head of a Cuvier's Beaked Whale (Ziphius cavirostris) to body scans of a Harbor Porpoise (Phocoena phocoena) using AMIRA Visualization software. Additional modifications will be made in the future to improve the anatomical accuracy. Shown here are the lungs/sinuses, brain, melon, skeleton and surrounding soft tissues (transparent).
