Cownose Ray Cephalic Lobes 0005

Rhinoptera bonasus
3D Volume Rendering Technique (VRT) reconstruction from CT scans of the cephalic lobe of a Cownose Ray (Rhinoptera bonasus). The cephalic lobes are thought to play a role primarily in feeding. Electroreceptors in the lobes can detect prey on the surface or buried in sandy bottoms. Additionally, the lobes may also function hydrodynamically to keep the ray close to the ocean floor.
