Abstract | The anatomy of the cochlea of twelve species of odontocetes, or thoothed whales, was compared using conventional micrography and a series of radiographic and digitized reconstruction techniques. These included edge enhancement X-ray, computerized tomographic (CT) scans, stereo-radiography, digital subtraction with contrast media, CT multi-planar reconstructions, and Multiple Marker analysis digitizations. The species were selected for differences in habitat, sociality, taxonomic distribution, and frequency and patterning of normal and ultrasonic vocalizations. The total data base covers three families of odontoceti and represents all major evolutionary divisions. |
