Eubalaena glacialis
3D Shaded Surface Display (SSD) reconstruction from CT scans of a vertebra from a Northern Right Whale (Eubalaena glacialis) showing a fracture of the anterior thoracic vertebral facet. Several other disk fractures were found within the same region. Given the magnitude of the breaks in such dense bone, it is believed ship strike was the likely cause. However, it was not possible to determined whether this event occurred pre or postmortem (related report). Specimen courtesy of the New England Aquarium (NEAq).
