Leatherback Sea Turtle Head 3D (D. coriacea)

ShareThis

3D reconstruction from CT scans of the head of a Leatherback Sea Turtle (Dermochelys coriacea) with a penetrating lesion and skull fracture approximately 30 cm in length along the dorsal surface of the head. Postmortem examination also showed severe penetrating wounds along the posterior and anterior carapace. The animal was discovered dead at sea (stranding data). The shape(s) and depth of the wounds indicate both sets of injuries may have been caused by boat propellers during two separate incidents. Specimen courtesy of the New England Aquarium (NEAq).
