Necropsy Report Description: Postmortem examination of a female calf Atlantic White-sided Dolphin (Lagenorhynchus acutus) that stranded (specimen data) along the coast of Cape Cod, Massachusetts in February 2012. The animal was deemed unreleasable by veterinary staff and was humanely euthanized on the beach. Necropsy observations (related report) showed "an emaciated state resulting in the lack of energy stores (energy depletion of blubber; autolyzed/gelatinous state of interface of fascia and blubber); congested lungs with white frothy fluid consistent with pulmonary edema" (A. Bogomolni). Specimen and photographs courtesy of the International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW).
